Information we collect

We collect information you choose to provide, including your first name, optional last name, and email address when you join the mailing list; your name and social profile when you submit a story; and information contained in messages, questions, story submissions, guest applications, or other communications.

The anonymous question form does not request your name, email address, social handle, or account. We receive the question and any context you choose to type. Please do not include identifying details in the question if you want it to remain anonymous to our editorial team.

A story submission may include personal experiences, symptoms, diagnoses, treatment history, or other health-related information you voluntarily share. Our website, hosting provider, and submission provider may also process basic technical information such as your IP address, browser type, device information, request time, and pages requested for security, reliability, and site operation.

Please do not submit medical records or information about another person unless we specifically request it through an appropriate process and you have the legal right and permission to provide it.

How we use information

We use information to send communications you requested; review anonymous questions, stories, and guest ideas; communicate with potential contributors; produce podcast or editorial content; respond to requests; protect participants; and maintain and secure the site.

Anonymous questions may be grouped, paraphrased, or discussed without identifying the person who submitted them. Story submissions are reviewed privately and are not automatically published.

We do not use voluntarily submitted health information to make medical decisions about you, determine insurance or employment eligibility, or sell targeted advertising.

Community accounts and public spaces

Information you place in a public profile, discussion, comment, or community area may be visible to other members or the public, depending on the feature and settings. Do not post information you do not want others to see, copy, or share.

We may review, restrict, preserve, or remove content and accounts to protect safety, enforce community rules, investigate abuse, comply with law, or preserve the integrity of the conversation. Private account information will not be made public except as described here, with your direction, or when legally required.

Service providers and sharing

Newsletter subscriptions are processed by Kit, our email service provider. Kit receives and processes the name and email address submitted through our form on our behalf. You can review Kit's privacy information.

We may share information with people and providers who help us operate the website, community, podcast, submissions, security, moderation, communications, transcription, production, or professional services. Access should be limited to what is reasonably necessary for their work. We may also disclose information with your permission, to protect rights and safety, during an organizational transaction, or when required by law. We do not sell personal information.

Retention, access, and your choices

We keep information for as long as reasonably necessary for the purpose it was collected, including operating accounts, reviewing submissions, maintaining editorial records, meeting legal obligations, resolving disputes, and protecting safety. Retention may differ by type of information and whether content was published.

Every marketing email should include an unsubscribe link. You may use our Contact page to request access, correction, account closure, or deletion, subject to applicable law, necessary verification, safety needs, and legitimate editorial or legal recordkeeping. Privacy rights differ by location, and we will respond to valid requests as required by the laws that apply.

Cookies, children, international visitors, and updates

The site does not intentionally use advertising cookies at this time. Hosting, account, community, and email providers may use essential technologies or maintain technical logs under their own policies. Links to third-party websites are governed by those websites' privacy practices.

Newsletter signup is not directed to children under 13. Story submissions and community accounts are intended for adults unless a separate process clearly states otherwise and includes any consent required by law. Information may be processed in the United States or other countries where our providers operate.

We may revise this policy as features and practices change. The date above will show the latest revision. Material changes will be communicated when required.
